Andrew Franks, Jr. MD | I was born and raised in Manhattan, a few blocks away from Bellevue Hospital. My father graduated from NYU School of Medicine in 1932 and was Clinical Professor of Dermatology and a Chief of Service during the tenure of Marion Sulzberger and Rudolf Baer. I am honored to have personally known them both. Our home frequently hosted the Department’s evening discussions of patients and current research. I was an avid listener, and realized early, the great personal reward derived from helping people who were ill. I trained at NYU Washington Square, New York Medical College, Mt. Sinai and Columbia Presbyterian and became Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Dermatology and Rheumatology. My goal was to care for people with autoimmune conditions affecting the skin especially lupus erythematosus. My research began in 1979 on fibrinogen degradation products in lupus under the mentorship of Drs. Dorothy Estes and Jane Morse at both Rockefeller and Columbia University, published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. In 1982, while working under Dr. E. Carwile Leroy at The Columbia Presbyterian Scleroderma Center, I studied the use of topical nitroglycerin for the treatment of Raynaud's phenomenon and digital ulcers, published in The Lancet, which received international recognition leading to an Exceptional Research Award presented at the University of Hamburg. I then became knowledgeable in the use of extracorporeal photopheresis working with Dr. Richard Edelson. This led to discovering its positive benefit in scleroderma fibrosis, published in 1993 in The International Journal of Dermatology. I also utilized a monoclonal antibody directed against IL-12/23 for the treatment of skin lupus, published in 2011 in The Archives of Dermatology. In 2012, I published on botulinum toxin for treatment of Raynaud’s phenomenon in patients with scleroderma and lupus in the Archives of Dermatology. Then I conducted the first trial of the PDE-4 inhibitor apremilast in the treatment of cutaneous lupus erythematosus, published in The Journal of Drugs in Dermatology in 2012. I also participated in the early outcome assessment on skin lupus of the human monoclonal antibody belimumab with Drs. Jill Buyon and Anca Askanase in the NYU Department of Rheumatology, a breakthrough treatment published in Arthritis & Rheumatism in 2012. In collaboration with Dr. Bruce Cronstein at the NYU Division of Translational Medicine, I studied the effects of the pro-fibrotic cytokines IL-33 and IL-13 and their modulation of dermal fibrosis via the A2A adenosine receptor. This research was published in The Journal of Investigative Dermatology, The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, and Arthritis and Rheumatism. My most cherished recognitions include NYU School of Medicine’s Outstanding Teacher Award from the Alpha Omega Alpha Chapter, the NYU School of Medicine Career Achievement Award, and The Medical Dermatology Society Career Achievement Award. My wife Linda K. Franks is also a professor at NYU School of Medicine in the Department of Dermatology and we have been blessed by our association with so many dear colleagues, mentees and friends. |
